Monday November 18, 2013
Reviewed chapters: 10 & 11 - discussed courage:
Chapter 10: "After my bout with Cecil Jacobs when I committed myself to a policy of cowardice, word got around that Scout Finch
wouldn't fight any more, her daddy wouldn't let her."
Chapter 11: "I never heard Atticus say like a pitcher of what. he would tell her the courthouse news, and would say he hoped with all his heart she'd have a good day tomorrow. He would return his hat to his head, swing me to his shoulders in her very presence, and we would go home in the twilight. It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived."
"I wanted you to see something about her - I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

Thursday November 21
We discussed chapters 16 & 17 led by students. We spent time adding points to the character log that we have the four characters (Atticus, Dill, Jem and Scout). We worked on this individually, in partners and as a class. We then took a minor character and created a Significant Identification (Sig. Id.) paragraph. The following is the paragraph that we created as a class:
Little Chuck Little (LCL) is a student in Scout's first grade classroom. He is a flat character that we only meet once,
after lunch on the first day of school. Lee introduces LCL to shoe the reader courage, a theme in this novel. Despite
the fact that he is of small stature LCL is not deterred and stands up for what is right. LCL's personality contrasts with
the Ewells, he exhibits chivalry by comforting the teacher.
Students had an opportunity to begin planning a Sig. Id. paragraph of a character of their choice.
Friday November 22
Today's class was a work period. Students were creating a Sig. Id. paragraph of the character of their choice (this planning was started last day) As the whole class was dedicated to this paragraph, they were due at the end of the class.

We discussed what happened in chapter 24. We then read and discussed chapter 25, 26 & 27. I showed the class a couple of speeches and we observed what the speaker did to deliver his message effectively. We set our start date for speeches: Thursday December 12 - we will have 6 speeches per day.
Thursday December 5
Today's class was an opportunity to work on speeches. Please note that you must include a minimum of two references in your speech, and one of those must be To Kill a Mockingbird. There is a worksheet that we worked on in class regarding understanding of research - this worksheet is for marks. The front (three questions) were filled out today, and the back (one question) will be completed after your speech is written. This worksheet will be handed in for summative assessment (marks) with your speech for formative assessment (comments only) and your bibliography for summative assessment (marks). Today was day one of two class days to work on your speech.
