Four different types of foreshadowing: 1) Prophecy: when a character is presented with information, usually good fortune, and usually comes true later in the story. 2) Red Herring: a deliberate attempt to throw the reader off a line of though and divert attention away from a particular plotline. 3) Flashback/forward: used by the author to give reader a bit of information that will will later become important. 4) Abstract: symbolic foreshadowing happens when the author implicitly includes changes in a characters circumstance with out telling the reader what they should be looking for.
