Functional Writing: Newspaper Article

Functional Writing: Newspaper Article

Five Parts of a Newspaper Article:
      1) Headline: Short and attention getting - when we write a story we call it a title
      2) Byline: who wrote the news paper article - this will be your  name unless the instructions say otherwise
      3) Lead Paragraph: This typically is only one complete, complex, meaningful sentence.  You will fit as many of the 5Ws in it as possible.
      4) Body Paragraph(s): This may be one or two paragraphs providing the reader with details of what you are reporting about.  You must          determine that you are giving your reader enough information.  This is where direct quotes from witnesses can be provided.
       5) Concluding Paragraph: This can be used to wrap up your article.  You might "call the reader to action" by suggesting where they can help with a cause, where they can phone tips to, etc.

Newspaper Checklist:
          * Header
                  - name, headline, date
          * Font: Times New Roman 12
          * Byline
          * Written in the Third Person - No use of the word "I"
          * Lead Paragraph
                 - who, what, when, where, why, how
          * Body Paragraph(s) - indicated by indenting with the tab button
          * Concluding Paragraph
                 - call to action (how can the public help?)
