Check out where Brinley likes to read! We here at A.B. Daley Community School are so excited to kick off our #100Places2Read 2019 Challenge! We are encouraging students to take a picture of where they read their books. The purpose of the challenge is to see if we can come up with 100 different places to read our books. The goal of this challenge is to show our students that you don't need to be in a classroom to be reading a book. We hope this excitement for reading carries us into and throughout the summer.
Where have you read today? Mrs. Watt Hey guys! I hope your summer is going great and you are reading lots!
I just finished the memoir that I had started, Educated by Tara Westover. Wow! What a crazy life she lead. She never took formal schooling until she was in university and then she ended up winning prestigious academic awards and she even went so far as to obtain a doctorate. She worked very hard for her education and it has paid off. I think what I liked most about this book is how she put words together. I call it "wordsmithing." Only talented writers can "wordsmith" and she is talented. I really enjoyed her story, despite there being a bit of sad part about her family. As I told you my love of reading came from reading Nancy Drew Mysteries, so did my fear of the dark. I was gifted a Nancy Drew for my 10th birthday and I did not look back. When I was in my late elementary years and early junior high years I really enjoyed many different authors. One of my favourite is Judy Blume. I love Tiger Eyes, Deenie, Are you there God it's me, Margret, those are just a few of my favourite of hers, you should really check out some of her work. My next read will be...you will have to wait...I am going shopping tonight. I will be using a gift card that a student gave me as a gift. I will let you know as I get it. Check out my twitter feed @Teachawatt Drop me a line in the comments below and let me know what you are reading and where do you know that there are #100Places2Read? Where have you read lately? Mrs. Watt Hello #45WABD! I hope you are having a great start to your summer! I am! I got to Kimberly and managed to read Last Song by David A. Poulsen and I was not disappointed, I read the 356 pages in two and a half days. I couldn't put it down. I loved the setting, Calgary is the city I grew up closest to and I could picture most of the places that #CullenandCobb visit. I think the best part is when Adam Cullen had to pick up a orange and chocolate milkshake from Peter's Drive In. Peter's is my favourite drive in, and they have the best milk shakes. My dad took my sisters and I there when we were little and I have introduced my children to Peter's and they love the milkshakes also. If you are in Calgary, see if your parents will take you there it is great!
The genre of Last Song is mystery, probably my second favourite genre right after historical fiction. The next book that I will ead is a non-fiction titled Mathematical Mindsets, this will help me become a better math teacher. I will be blogging about each chapter (on my professional website). For enjoyment, I am going to read Educated by Tara Westover, this is a memoir. Memoir is a genre that is non-fiction written in the first person about a part of their life. This is about a girl who did not go to school until she was 17, and ended up going to Harvard and Cambridge, which are very prestigious universities. I am intrigued to find out how and why she did that. I hope your summer is going good so far. I would really like to hear about what you are reading. Let me know in the comments below. Happy Reading, Mrs. Watt Hi, Guys! I can't believe that Christmas Break is already here! It seems like it was just yesterday that I got to meet you.
I am really looking forward to the time off of school to catch up on my reading. As you know I am in a Book Club and the book for January is called A Year in Provence. So I need to read that. I have joined the ABD book club and I am going to follow the reading plan for reading the book, Lock and Key: The initiation. And I have received a gift card to Chapters! So I get to go shopping for a book. I can't wait to hear about your holidays and what book you received as a gift! Write to me in the comments. Mrs. Watt Well the fantastic summer weather continues. The Calgary Stampede is in full swing! One on the announcers at the Stampede is David A. Poulsen, and he just happens to be the author of the book I am currently reading, Dead Air.
This is the second in the #CullenandCobb mystery series. The first is Serpents Rising. I have read it and really enjoyed it, and was really looking forward to the release of Dead Air. I did run up to Calgary and got my signed copy from David. What I really like about this series is that it is set in Calgary. I grew up west of Cochrane and we spent a lot of time in Calgary, so I am very familiar with many of the places in the book. I can actually picture 17th Ave and the places Cullen would be driving past. It is often said that authors should write about what they know. Places, events and things that they do. As a reader, it is nice to also read about what you know. It helps you engage on a different level. If you are a swimmer and you read about a swimmer you know exactly how the character feels when he climbs up to the starting blocks. If you live in or have traveled to New York City, you understand why Auggie's family (from the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio) walks most everywhere. If you have an interest in what the characters are doing then you are more likely to complete and enjoy the book. I am hoping to finish the latest #CullenandCobb story this week and the book I will be reading next is The Crusader by Michael Alexander Eisner, this is a historical fiction novel set in Spain during the Christian Crusades. I hope you have a great book that you can enjoy in the shade. Drop me a note and tell me what you are reading and why you are enjoying it. Hello! Well summer is off with a bang! The sun is shining and the books are calling me. I have started off the summer with a Guy Gavriel Kay book titled Sailing to Sarantium. Kay is an award winning Canadian author. I really enjoy his writing. If you are looking for a mystery he has written a young adult book titled Ysabel, I really enjoyed it, I think you will too.
I will be heading west to do some camping this weekend. So I have packed several books. One of my favourite summertime activities is to sit around the campfire and read a great book. This past weekend I went up to Calgary to a book signing of one of my favourite authors. David A. Poulsen (an author from west of Claresholm) has released his newest in the Cullen and Cobb series, Dead Air, I can't wait to sit by the fire and read this book. Mystery is one of my favourite genres. The series I first fell in love with is Nancy Drew mysteries. I love that there is just a few illustrations and they always had a caption. I loved that Nancy was so brave. Unlike me, I blame those books on my fear of the dark:0). I would love to hear about what you are reading...drop me a note and tell me what you are reading around your campfire. Well actually I am at the university! I LOVE The University of Lethbridge and I really miss taking classes here. So I am very happy to be back on campus learning. Today is the first day of Teacher's Convention. So far I have attended on session and I am just waiting for the next to begin. I love the discussion of ideas of what I am passionate about (teaching).
I am still reading. The main character in my book has just discovered that she wants to be a writer when she grows up. I think that would be a very fun occupation. While I am enjoying my day, I can't wait to get home and read! Read On, Mrs. Watt Well I spent Saturday skiing with my family - that was my family day. Today I am headed to Calgary with Payton.
In the mean time and between time I have been reading. I generally have at least two books on the go at all times. As you all know I am reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and the genre that it falls into is historical fiction. I also generally read a non-fiction. The one I am reading right now is about nutrition. With athletes in the house - and picky eaters, I have a hard time keeping them fed properly so I am reading up on how to feed them well. I hope you are having a great Reading Week and I am happy to hear about what you are reading. Read On, Mrs. Watt |
