Italian Sonnets:Italian poets were the first to write sonnets. They are made up of an octave (8 lines), and a sestet (6 lines). The rime scheme of the octave is abbaabba. The rhyme scheme of the sestet is often cdecde or cdcdcd. It is written in iambic pentameter (five sets of an unstressed and stressed syllable). The octave usually presents a problem or situation, the sestet presents a solution or comment about the situation.
